Busitema Forest, located in Uganda, is home to a diverse range of mammal species, including several primates. One notable primate species found in the forest is the baboon. However, like many other natural habitats around the world, Busitema Forest faces the issue of illegal hunting and poaching.

Baboons being poached for Rituals

Having known for rich  biodiversity, including a variety of mammals species and primates, and other species, baboons have today registered a terrible attack all away from the local inhabitant of the area in Busia District.

Local inhabitants in the surrounding areas of Busitema Forest rely on the forest’s resources for their livelihoods, including food, medicinal plants, and other materials. Unfortunately, some individuals resort to illegal hunting to meet their needs or for economic gain. These activities can have detrimental effects on the wildlife population, including baboons and other mammal species.

Poachers, who specifically target baboons for various reasons, contribute to the decline of these primates. The reasons for poaching baboons can vary, including bush meat trade, traditional beliefs, and the illegal pet trade. Some people hunt baboons for their meat, which is consumed locally or sold as a source of income

. In certain cultures, specific body parts or organs of baboons are believed to possess mystical or medicinal properties, leading to targeted hunting for these purposes. Additionally, there is a demand for live baboons as pets or for display in zoos, leading to illegal trade and poaching.

As earlier on today, mysterious reports circulated around and blasted the illegal hunting. There’s tragedy rumors coming from Busia District that some poachers hunt the baboons to perform rituals for healing and free land to increase agriculture production.

The on-going poaching and illegal hunting on the baboons have threatened the eco-touring opportunities in the Busitema forest reserve.

The authorities and conservation organizations in Uganda, such as the Uganda Wildlife Authority, have not yet come out with a conclusive remark over the illegal practice in Busia. It is up on their role work to combat illegal hunting and poaching in Busitema Forest and other protected areas.
